EBOLA: U.S. records first death-Aniexty Heightens over its spread

The first person-Thomas Eric Duncan-42, who was diagnosed with Ebola in the United States died early yesterday, officials with Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital announced.

"It is with profound sadness and heartfelt disappointment that we must inform you of the death of Thomas Eric Duncan this morning at 7:51 am," a spokesman for Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas said in a statement.
"Our thoughts today are with his family," said US President Barack Obama, who said his death showed "we don't have a lot of margin for error. If we don't follow protocols and procedures that are put in place, then we're putting folks in our communities at risk".

There's heightened sense of anxiety over the spread of Ebola in the US as a law
enforcement official was admitted to hospital after having been in the apartment where Duncan stayed and interacted with some of the people who live there, all of whom are under quarantine and not exhibiting symptoms.  The Sheriff Deputy was transported by ambulance to the hospital after going to an urgent care facility with “some” Ebola-like symptoms, which can also be symptoms of other illnesses. The ambulance crew who helped the sheriff into the vehicle wore protective suits and carried out decontamination procedures.

“The risk is minimal,” Maher Maso, the mayor of Frisco, a northern Dallas suburb, said at a hastily-called press conference about the law enforcement official. He added that authorities are moving forward “with an abundance of caution”.

President Goodluck rewards Athletes and Officials with N300m

President Goodluck Jonathan on Wednesday splashed over N300 million on athletes and their officials who made the country proud at different international competitions in 2014.
Jonathan announced the cash rewards at a reception in honour of the 351 sports men and women at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Among the athletes were those who participated in the African Senior Athletics Championships in Marrakech, Morocco, and the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
Others were participants in the African Youth Games in Gaborone, Botswana; the World Junior Athletics Championships in Oregon, USA, and the 2014 FIFA Female U-20 Football World Cup in Montreal, Canada.
The list included athletes in the Partille World Handball Youth Championships, in Sweden; the World Powerlifting championships in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, and the African Shooting Championship in Cairo, Egypt.
Also in the list were participants in the African Senior Wrestling Championship and the African Junior Wrestling Championship.
In a remark, Jonathan reassured Nigerians that his administration was determined to ensure that all sectors of national life were given the necessary motivation to achieve set goals.
Jonathan gave the assurance while hosting the country’s athletics and officials who emerged victorious at different international competitions in 2014
He noted that the athletes’ achievements attested to the fact that with adequate preparation and motivation, Nigerians could surmount all obstacles to attain set goals.
According to him, government will continue to appreciate and reward excellence to serve as inspiration to those who are called to represent the country.
While savouring the achievements of the athletes, the president recalled that the journey to the present was not easy.
“Realising the significance of sports in national transformation, I took the decision to organise a retreat for the sports sector in 2012.
“This arose from my conviction that our outing at the 2012 Olympic Games did not represent full potential.
“Of course, if you look at the continent of Africa, we have the largest population; we are highest in terms of diversity and our economy is also the largest.
“In any competition in Africa, third position is not good enough for us because in all the other parameters we are never third.
“I am happy to note that things have progressively changed for the better since that retreat,” he said.
Jonathan commended that National Sports Commission for the “dedicated implementation” of the decisions taken at that retreat.
The president noted that the exploits of the athletes had gone a long way in further boosting the country’s image in the comity of nations.
He added that their zeal and dedication were remarkable and Nigeria’s flag was raised high to the delight and glory of all citizens. (written by NAN)

Today on Spicy Board: Office Romance Advice. A True Story.

It was my first day on the job. I was a junior from the university interning at the local album rock radio station on Hawley Street. I was scheduled to meet with Kevin N., the Program Director, who was giving me a tour of the studios.
Not more than a minute from the time that Kevin came into the lobby and introduced himself, she walked through the door that separated the studios from the reception area. I remember the feeling like it was yesterday. My head snapped from right to left as she passed in front of me. "I think I'm going to like it here," I said to Kevin. Kevin promptly responded, "Yeah, she's our Traffic Manager."
Over the next 4 years I graduated and took a job working full-time at the station in the sales department. Kevin was now the Operations Manager. My sales were soaring. I figure it was because every time I had a new sales order I had to discuss it with the Traffic Manager.
Yup, she was still there, and crazy good looking as ever. I loved those meetings. They were filled with innuendo and long sessions of me leaning over her shoulder to review ad schedules.
Every so often the staff and DJ's went out to drinks at the local watering hole and she was there. It was all I could do to make my way over to her and throw back a couple of shots with the group.
And then it happened. I'll leave it to the imagination, but let's just say that an opportunity arose for us to have a few :60 second commercial breaks. Uh-oh.

Wake up kids. It was 1983. You can't do that stuff now!

At least not without some serious discussion and a designated driver. I consider myself pretty lucky that I caught the end of the 'Mad Men era.' Times are different. The office romance is still alive and well but there are some critical rules of the road that I would strongly advise. After all, people's lives and careers are at stake. According to Forbes, between 39-59% of workers have dated a colleague.
If that special someone has caught your eye in the office review this checklist before making the advance and embarking on the forbidden journey:
  •
  • Know your Company's policy on office dating. Every Company is different and there may be consequences from the start. You might find yourself in a situation where you have to quit your job or change locations for the fire to keep burning.
  • Keep it professional. Refrain from the cute touching, kissing and other PDA's. Your co-workers will appreciate you both for being discreet.
  • Assume that the staff knows, but don't flaunt it. Back in the day people got a kick out of the office romance game. Not anymore. Many may be offended. Their opinion, whether you like it or not, counts.
  • Let the boss know before she/he finds out from someone else. Your professional attitude will go a long way in maintaining the boss's respect.
  • Consider what might happen if the relationship doesn't work out. Give it more than a minute's thought. It's best to think about it when you are sober.
  • Show respect. While this is true in any circumstance, it is especially true in a professional environment. Go the extra mile to be thoughtful, polite and understanding.
  • Don't take business trips together. Your chances of crossing the lines of Company policy get very muddy with this one.
  • Understand that no means no. If he/she says that they don't want the relationship, don't push it. Not only is that unprofessional, it's creepy.
HR Managers please chime in with comments below and add to my list or if you have an office romance that you would like to share, please do!

World’s richest man calls for a radical overhaul of our work-life balance

The 74-year-old billionaire Carlos Slim-world’s richest man has called for a radical overhaul of our work-life balance that would see people at their jobs for just three days a week but with 11 hours working day each-instead of 8 hours.

The Mexican Telecom Tycoon-worth over $80 billion, raised this concept at a conference in Paraguay during the summer, which he believes would not only re-invigorate how we live, but be positive for the economy and financial markets. Also gives would give people more time to themselves during all their lives - not when they are 65 and retired.

With three work days a week, there is more time to relax and for quality of life. Do not forget that the retirement age would be increased to 75.

It is sure a good concept. Don't you think so?

GEJ Demands Immediate Retraction and Apology from RichestLifestyle.com

President Jonathan has described his inclusion as one of the richest presidents in Africa by a U.S. website – RichestLifestyle.com as baseless and libellous and has demanded immediate apology and retraction.

The website had named the President as the sixth richest African President with an estimated net worth of $100 million, which is equivalent to N16.5 Billion.

A statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, described the write up as another attempt to unjustifiably portray the President as a corrupt leader and incite public disaffection against him.

“We have noted with consternation the listing of President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan by a website – RichestLifestyle.com – as the sixth richest African President with an estimated net worth of $100 million.

“The Presidency condemns the totally unwarranted inclusion of President Jonathan in the publication titled Africa’s Richest Presidents 2014 as another attempt to unjustifiably portray the President as a corrupt leader and incite public disaffection against him.

“We categorically assert that there is no factual basis for ranking President Jonathan as the sixth richest African Head of State with a net worth of about $100 million.

“As is well known, President Jonathan has never been a businessman or entrepreneur, but a life-long public servant. The President has held public office since 1999 and has regularly declared his assets as required by Nigerian laws. He has had no personal income since 1999 other than his official remuneration as deputy governor, governor, vice president, acting president and president which are matters of public record.

“There has been no significant variation in the totality of his personal assets as contained in his last declaration to the Nigerian Code of Conduct Bureau in 2011 which, as can be verified, was a very, very far cry from the $100 million figure now being bandied about by Richest Lifestyle.com and other irresponsible, copy-cat publications.

“The clear and unacceptable imputation of the claim that President Jonathan is now worth about $100 Million is that the President has corruptly enriched himself while in office which is certainly not the case.

“We therefore demand a retraction and an unreserved apology from Richest Lifestyle. com and all those who have reproduced the offensive article.

“Otherwise, they should be prepared to substantiate their libelous claims against the President in courts of law within and outside Nigeria.

President has never been a businessman or entrepreneur, but a life-long public servant and everything concerning him are matters of public record, Dr. Abati added.

Ebola: Male Survivors Advised to use Condom

Ebola Expert has warned that the Ebola Virus could remain alive in semen for up to 90days, increasing the danger of contamination through unprotected sex, even after the World Health Organization (WHO) declares an area free of the disease.

The WHO is hoping to announce later this week that Nigeria and Senegal are free of Ebola after 42 days with no infections, the standard period for declaring an outbreak over, twice the maximum 21-day incubation period of the virus. “In a convalescent male, the virus can persist in semen for at least 70 days; one study suggests persistence for more than 90 days,” the WHO said in an information note on Monday.

“If we would apply the rule for double the time, that would be 180 days, six months. I think it (90 days) is probably a compromise, for practicality,” he told a news conference in Geneva. Ebola spreads via bodily fluids such as blood and saliva, but it has also been detected in breast milk and urine, as well as semen, the WHO added.

“Certainly, the advice has to be for survivors to use a condom, to not have unprotected sex, for 90 days,” said Peter Piot, a professor at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and a discoverer of Ebola in 1976.

More than 3,400 people are already known to have died in the world’s worst Ebola outbreak on record, the vast majority of them in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.

HEALTH: Laboratory-Grown Penises Ready to be Tested on Humans

They could be new hope to men with genital abnormalities or injuries in as little as five years.

Scientists at the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine have successfully engineered Laboratory-Grown Penises which are ready to be tested on humans.

As the world leaders in regenerative medicine, they’ve achieved some remarkable things in the past. In 1999, they became the first in the world to successfully implant a lab-grown organ into humans—a bladder. Since then, they’ve transplanted engineered vaginas into women born with defects or without vaginas entirely. a

Anthony Atala-Team leader began this genital journey since 1992, but it was not until 2008 that the scientists proved transplanting engineered penises was theoretically possible. Having spent a considerable amount of time working out the best way to engineer these tricky organs, the team managed to grow 12 functioning penises for rabbit subjects.

After grafting them on to the recipients, all tried to mate with a female, eight successfully ejaculated, and four produced offspring. While these results were certainly encouraging, gaining approval for human trials is another kettle of fish. However, Atala is confident that it could be granted by the FDA within five years if they can prove the technique is safe.

So how do they do it? They first obtain a donor penis and strip all the cells from it with a detergent. The researchers are then left with a collagen scaffold which they then seed with a combination of cultivated smooth muscle and endothelial cells from the recipient. Using the patient’s own cells eliminates the risk of immunological rejection that often occurs when transplants are given from another individual.
However, because the cells are taken from the male’s genitals, it means that the procedure could not be used for female-to-male sex reassignment surgery.

Group Calls For Dismissal Of AIG Of Police

A human rights group-Doing Democracy Movement (DDM) has demanded the dismissal of Joseph Mbu-Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 7, Abuja. The demands came after the arrest of African Independent Television journalist Amaechi Anakwue, on Mbu's orders,  for describing him as "controversial" in a TV Programme.

DDM convener Anyakwee Nsirimovu condemned Mbu's actions, saying, “DDM calls on all social forces in Nigeria and Nigerians of all shades of opinion to see the ultimate hazard in discouraging thought, expression, hope and imagination as exemplified in Mbu’s latest act of impunity; as a fundamental threat that must be resisted if we must remain free and our government valuable."
“To void citizens from blowing off steam is to quicken the explosion of society. Collectively therefore, we should be united upon insisting that an omnipotent AIG Mbu has no place in civilised policing in Nigeria, therefore, should be dismissed forthwith.”

ARMS DEAL: South Africa Seizes Another $5.7m from Nigeria

The Asset Forfeiture Unit of the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in South Africa has seized $5.7 million for yet another arms deal between South Africa and Nigeria, reported City Press, a Johannesburg-based newspaper.
This is the second multimillion-dollar arms deal between the two countries in the past month that has resulted in the money being frozen in South African banks, for allegedly being proceeds of illegal transactions.
However, the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), in a statement yesterday trying to justify the large movement of cash across borders for the purchase of arms, said the transactions were legitimate.
Documents in the newspaper’s possession showed that the earlier consignment was approved by the Nigerian government – that the country’s National Security Adviser, Col Sambo Dasuki (rtd), personally issued the end-user certificate for the transaction.
An entire “shopping list” was supplied with the certificate, which included everything from helicopters to unmanned aircraft, rockets and ammunition.
Sources close to the investigation said the latest transaction was between Cerberus Risk Solutions, an arms broker in Cape Town, and Societe D’Equipments Internationaux, a Nigerian company in Abuja.
An impeccable source said this company paid the R60 million (N1.2 billion) into Cerberus’ account at Standard Bank.
Cerberus was previously registered as a broker with the National Conventional Arms Control Committee (NCACC), but the registration expired in May this year.
The marketing and contracting permits also expired at the same time. But the
company has since applied for re-registration, which was in the NCACC’s mailbox for more than two months.
Sources told Rapport that Cerberus apparently tried to pay the money back to the Nigerian company, after which the bank became suspicious.
The NPA’s Asset Forfeiture Unit subsequently obtained a court order in the South Gauteng High Court to seize the money.
NPA spokesperson Nathi Mncube said there were no indications that the two transactions were related. Both are now the subject of a criminal investigation and all possible information and connections are being investigated."
